Gold is the only metal that is not only enduringly beautiful, but also easy to work with, rare, extremely valuable and practically indestructible. Even diamonds do not combine all these properties. Gold is so ductile that one gram can be stretched into a wire that is almost 3.5 kilometers long; and so malleable that one ounce can be beaten into a sheet thin enough to cover an area of 100 square feet. It is such a heavy metal, that if all the 102,000 tons of gold ever mined is molten into a cube, each of the sides would be just 17 meters.

Interestingly, about 10 billion tons of gold are estimated to be held in suspension in the oceans of the world, but the expense of getting gold from this source would far exceed its value. That is why nobody has tried to extract gold from this source.
